Pediatric Early Detection of Severe Illness in Suriname

The Emergency Department (ED) of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo is the only one in Suriname. Children presenting at the emergency department can be very ill and in many cases need admission to the general wards of the APCS or the PICU. In 2021 a large study was performed that included about 2500 children presenting at the ED. Demographical and clinical data were recorded to be able to assemble reasons for presentation at the ED and to identify risk factors that could be used in early warning scores for criticall illness, to predict admission to either the general ward or the PICU, and to predict mortality. Furthermore, sera were collected to be able to perform biomarker studies to add to these prediction models.
